Square face shape: one jaw angle nobody has defined

Forehead, cheekbones and jaw are close to the same width, and the jaw has a defined corner below the ear. That is the whole definition, and all of it except the last clause is also the definition of a round face. Square and round are the same rectangle with different corners. Which means the entire category rests on one measurement — and no published source says how much of it you need.

Everything the tool measures from a front photo: three widths and a length. Look at what is missing. None of these four lines is the corner of the jaw, and the corner is the only thing that separates this shape from round. The angle is derived from the jaw line and the chin, which is why it is the softest number on the page.

How to recognise a square face

No corner at the jaw. If you can find the angle where the jaw turns, it is probably square.

Run a finger from under your ear down along the jaw to the chin. If it turns a corner, you are looking at square. If it sweeps, you are looking at round. That is a better instruction than any number we could give you, and the rest of this page explains why.

The measurement exists. The threshold does not.

The angle at the corner of the jaw is a real anthropometric variable. It is called the gonial angle, it has been measured in populations, and it is the only thing separating a square face from a round one. So you would expect the styling taxonomy to borrow a number from the measurement literature. It never did.

There is no published cutoff anywhere saying a square face begins below some angle. Every tool that returns square, ours included, is applying a threshold someone chose. That is not a scandal, it is what happens when a category comes from eyewear retail rather than from anatomy, but it does mean a confident square verdict is a convention being reported as a measurement.

One trap if you try to reason it out yourself: the gonial angle is reported to increase with age. So the folk rule that a square jaw means a low angle does not travel across faces of different ages, and a threshold tuned on one age group will quietly misread another.

What our own classifier does with square

We measured 43 distinct faces with the detector this site ships. One of them came back square. That is the rarest result of the six, and it is worth being precise about what it means: it is a fact about where our threshold sits, not a claim about how common square faces are. We have not calibrated these prototypes against labelled faces, and we say so on every page that quotes them.

The jaw is doing the work, and doing it decisively. Across those 43 faces, the jaw measurement is the reason square is ruled out 29 times. No other measurement comes close on this shape. Which is exactly what you would predict from the definition — and exactly the measurement with no published threshold behind it.

One more number, and it cuts against us. Our detector writes a result as a pair, oval/round rather than one label, when the two closest shapes are within a set margin. Eight of the 43 faces came back as pairs. Square was not in any of them. Given that square and round differ by a single continuous measurement, square should be one of the easiest shapes to land on a boundary. That it never does is a sign our square threshold sits too far out, not a sign that square faces are unusually clear-cut. What is the difference between a square and a round face shape?

A square face has a visible angle where the jaw turns up toward the ear. A round face curves through the same place. Nothing about the proportions tells the two apart, which is why guides that list proportions cannot help you here.
